6 Magical Waterfront Photo Locations Near Columbus, Ohio

There’s something truly special about being near the water. Maybe it’s the calm it brings. Maybe it’s the way light dances across the surface at golden hour. Or maybe it’s just that peaceful feeling of slowing down, taking a breath, and being present with the people you love most.  Being a mom of 6 and a Columbus Ohio family photographer,  I know being around water and sand can open up some real genuine moments of play and laughter.  Kids love water and love getting messy.  Want real life moments that do not look posed and fake?  Let them play, let them bring out the child in you and connect with your child/children.

If you’re looking for a dreamy, natural setting for your next photo session—without leaving Central Ohio—you’re in the right place. There are so many beautiful waterfront photo locations near Columbus, Ohio that feel like a hidden escape, perfect for maternity, motherhood, and family portraits.

I’ve spent years photographing all over Central Ohio, and I’m excited to share my favorite lakefront and beach spots with you. Whether you want sandy toes or a peaceful shoreline, these are my go-to locations for heartfelt, light-filled sessions.

6 Magical Waterfront Photo Spots Around Columbus

Alum Creek State Park – Delaware, OH

This is hands-down one of my most requested locations. Alum Creek offers the full package: a wide, sandy beach, gentle waves, tall grasses, and golden sunsets that light up the sky. You can start your session on the sand, let the kids splash, and end with snuggles as the sun goes down. It’s about 30 minutes from Columbus, making it easy to access but still peaceful.

Best for: Maternity, families with little ones, motherhood
Why I love it: It gives you that dreamy, laid-back beach feel—without driving hours to the coast.
When to go: Weeknight evenings are perfect. You’ll avoid weekend crowds and catch golden hour light.

Prairie Oaks Metro Park – Darby Bend Lakes

This is one of my favorite hidden gems. Prairie Oaks offers quiet lake coves, sandy edges, grassy trails, and still water that reflects the sky in the most beautiful way. It’s tucked away just west of Columbus, and it feels peaceful and grounded. Sessions here often feel like little adventures—barefoot walks, soft moments, and real connection.

Best for: Families, storytelling maternity, barefoot motherhood sessions
Vibe: Natural, earthy, golden
Tip: There’s very little walking from the parking lot to the lakefront, which is great if you’re bringing littles.

Buckeye Lake – Liebs Island Area

If you’re craving a location with some character, Buckeye Lake delivers. It has a small beach area, rocky edges, docks, and plenty of charm. It gives off that “lake town” feeling—laid-back, a little breezy, and full of opportunity for movement and storytelling.

Best for: Couples, playful families, casual maternity
Vibe: Relaxed, nostalgic, fun
Pro tip: Add an ice cream stop after your session for the perfect memory (and bonus photos!)

Hoover Reservoir – Westerville, OH

This one isn’t a traditional beach, but it’s still one of my favorite spots to shoot. Hoover Reservoir has quiet shoreline paths, driftwood, big rocks, tall grasses, and that soft, golden light that makes every session feel like a painting. It’s especially lovely in the fall, when the leaves reflect off the water.

Best for: Maternity with older siblings, families with teens, couples
Vibe: Calm, clean, golden
Where to go: Red Bank Marina and Twin Bridges areas have the best views and easiest access

Delaware State Park Beach – Delaware, OH

This beach feels quiet and serene—perfect for slower-paced, snuggly sessions. The lake stays still at sunset, which creates a beautiful reflection, and there are trees nearby if you want a little variety in your background. It’s spacious, natural, and easy to relax here.

Best for: Maternity, motherhood, soft family sessions
Vibe: Simple, peaceful, light-filled
Style tip: Neutrals and earth tones photograph beautifully here

Antrim Lake – Clintonville, OH

Antrim Lake is smaller, but it’s perfect for quick sessions or families who want something close to home. There’s a small sandy edge, a wide trail around the lake, and some lovely little pockets of light. It’s easy to access, which makes it ideal for young families or maternity sessions when you don’t want to hike far.

Best for: Mini sessions, maternity, couples
Vibe: Quiet, romantic, city-close
When to go: Early mornings are peaceful, with pastel light and less foot traffic

Whispy Shades studio pond – Glenford OH

It is not a beach nor a lake, but it is a private pond.  No more worrying about other people being in your shoot or ruining a authentic moment.  It is perfect if you want just you and your family for your family session or if you want to have a private moment to yourself for your maternity session.  Imagine getting on a kayak with your partner and floating around while, you belly laugh and splash water at each other.  This is the perfect location for sunset, water, and open field around.

Best for: Maternity, family, and seniors

When to go: Sunset

Why Waterfront Sessions Are So Magical

Water has a way of slowing us down…You take deeper breaths…You let the kids explore…and you feel more present. I’ve noticed that when we’re by the water—whether it’s a calm lake or a sandy beach—people feel more.  That’s what makes the photos so emotional, so real, and so meaningful.

It’s not just about the background, it’s about how the setting makes you feel. And I think that’s why these waterfront photo locations near Columbus, Ohio are some of the most requested.
